The Four Rules of Gun Safety:

Gun Safety Rule 1 – All guns are always loaded.
Gun Safety Rule 2 – Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Gun Safety Rule 3 – Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are aligned with the target.
Gun Safety Rule 4 – Be sure of your target and its surroundings.

Ten Commandments of Gun Safety:

Gun Safety Rule 1 – Treat every gun with the respect due a loaded gun.
Gun Safety Rule 2 – Carry only empty guns, taken down or with the action open, into your car, camp and home.
Gun Safety Rule 3 – Always be sure that the barrel and action are clear of obstructions.
Gun Safety Rule 4- Always carry your gun so that you can control the direction of the muzzle.
Gun Safety Rule 5 – Be sure of your target before you pull the trigger.
Gun Safety Rule 6 – Never point a gun at anything you do not want to shoot.
Gun Safety Rule 7 – Never leave your gun unattended unless you unload it first.
Gun Safety Rule 8 – Never climb a tree or a fence with a loaded gun.
Gun Safety Rule 9 – Never shoot at a flat, hard surface or the surface of water.
Gun Safety Rule 10 – Do not mix gunpowder and alcohol.

Jeff Cooper’s Four Rules of Gun Safety:
Gun Safety Rule 1 – All guns are always loaded.

The National Rifle Association provides a similar set of gun safety rules:

Gun Safety Rule 1 – ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
Gun Safety Rule 1 – ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.

Project Appleseed provides similar gun safety rules for their rifle marksmanship clinics:

Gun Safety Rule 1 – Always keep the muzzle in a safe direction.
Gun Safety Rule 1 – Do not load until given the load command.
Gun Safety Rule 1 – Keep your finger off the trigger until the sights are on the target.
Gun Safety Rule 1 – Make sure those around you follow the safety rules.

The Canadian Firearms Program uses the concept of The Four gun safety ACTS:

Gun Safety Rule 1 – Assume every firearm is loaded.f
Gun Safety Rule 1 – Control the muzzle direction at all times.
Gun Safety Rule 1 – Trigger finger off trigger and out of trigger guard.
Gun Safety Rule 1 – See that the firearm is unloaded. PROVE it safe.
